a modern guide to better rest

we spend a third of our lives asleep. we design everything else: our mornings, our workouts, our careers. sleep gets whatever is left over.
designing sleep is my attempt to fix that. a modern guide to better rest, written the only way i know how: like a designer. practical, calm, and honest about what actually moves the needle.
watching my mother go through illness changed how i think about health. losing her changed how i think about time. permanently.
after she passed, i went looking for answers. sleep, stress, recovery, food, movement, the whole quiet conversation between the mind and the body. every road led back to the same place: the night. when i slept well, i could show up for my life. when i slept badly, everything dimmed.
i left for seoul, then the himalayas, then tokyo, the city that taught me that ending the day well is a craft of its own. somewhere on that road, this book started writing itself.
i wrote it for her, in a way. and for anyone who keeps postponing rest until some quieter season that never comes.
the hours before bed decide the night. i treat them the way i'd treat a first screen: what you see, what you touch, what you let in. arranged on purpose, not by default.
light, temperature, sound, the objects within reach. i walk through the room the way a designer walks through a product, and share the small changes that compound into better nights.
sleep responds to inputs: when you eat, when you move, how you wind down. the book maps the levers, so you can adjust them deliberately, and kindly.
i'm joseph, a designer and founder living in tokyo. i run startup ui, a design studio for health and wellness founders, and i build small health products of my own, the ones closest to my heart.
designing sleep is my first book, written under the metaphysical guidance of my mentor, dr. shashi dubey. 11 years designing and building products, turned toward the most analog thing we do.
chapters in progress, research notes, and launch updates land first in my newsletter, joyful journey. i read every reply.
